Providing a Sustainable Hot Water Solution for Base Hospital Mahiyanganaya

Background
Base Hospital Mahiyanganaya, located in the Badulla District, is the only base hospital in the area and plays a crucial role in providing healthcare services to people across three provinces and six districts. The hospital accommodates approximately 600 patients daily and requires a consistent and reliable supply of hot water for essential needs such as drinking and tea preparation. At present, the hospital relies on gas and electricity to generate the required 1,000 liters of hot water per day, which results in high operational costs.

Challenge

However, the rising cost of  conventional energy sources such as gas & electricity has placed a heavy financial burden on the hospital. With around 600 patients relying on hot water for essential needs such as drinking and tea preparation, maintaining a consistent supply has become increasingly challenging. The current methods are not only costly but also unsustainable in the long run. Therefore, the hospital urgently requires a more economical and environmentally friendly solution to meet its daily hot water demand.

Solution
Implementing two Biomass Hot Water Heaters with hot water storage containers would provide a sustainable and cost-efficient alternative. The hospital’s kitchen, which prepares meals for both patients and staff, produces a steady supply of coconut shells that can be repurposed as biomass fuel. Utilizing these readily available resources, the installation of a suitable biomass hot water system will significantly reduce dependency on gas and electricity, lower operational costs, and ensure an uninterrupted supply of hot water. This sustainable solution will not only benefit patient care and hygiene but also contribute to the hospital’s long-term energy efficiency goals.
